What is the Best Time to Visit New Zealand?

The best time to visit depends on what you’re looking for. Generally the best time (high season) would be from December to April.

Here’s a quick overview:

  • December to February: Peak season and warmest weather. (Summer)
  • March to May: Off-season with more stable, cooler weather. A good time to travel with lower prices and more stable weather. (Autumn)
  • June to August: Ideal for winter sports enthusiasts, especially in the South Island where you’ll find ski resorts. (Winter)
  • September to November: In the springtime, the weather becomes gradually warmer but more unpredictable. Prices can still be slightly lower than in the summer.

Planning Your Visit

Keep in mind that New Zealand's seasons are opposite to those in the northern hemisphere. For a holiday in December, it's important to note that it's summer in New Zealand. This means it's peak season, with higher prices and a strong demand for accommodation and car rentals. Be sure to book ahead, as New Zealand is a very popular destination. However, if you're traveling during the off-season, you can afford to be a bit more flexible with your plans.

Transportation

Most people in New Zealand get around by car or van. While there are a few buses connecting major towns, it’s highly recommended to have your own transportation if you want to explore more remote areas. Campervans are a popular option as they combine accommodation and transportation, offering a more comfortable and flexible travel experience. However, before booking your van, ensure that the vehicle is self-contained (includes facilities like a toilet and water supply), as this is required for freedom camping in many areas, especially the ones that are free of cost. You can still travel with a non-self-contained van but you will be much more restricted of where you can stay the night.

Here are some great van rental companies to travel around New Zealand:

A good thing to know: Jucy rental company typically holds monthly contests where participants can share photos or videos featuring their van to highlight part of their trip. One winner is chosen every month, and the company will reimburse the full cost of the van rental for the winner.

If traveling by van isn't your thing, you can opt to explore New Zealand using local Intercity buses, which conveniently connect towns across the country!
